Vincent Romero- Figure Artist- Critique

Vincent is a Spanish painter who focuses on expressive figure paintings using pastel colors. All his paintings are simply amazing and it is extremely difficult to choose one out of all those, so I will talk about his painting techniques generally. All or most of his paintings are subjected to the women figure, in various different poses as shown below. Something that makes his paintings successful is his accurate use of light and shadows, proper foreshortening, and perfect body and facial proportions.

He has observed very carefully how sunlight hits the human figure and how it changes the light and shadow in that area. I adore the way he paints the folds of clothing using the light and dark pattern technique. There are no outlines visible and everything in the painting has a soft and supple look to it. He has included extremely fine details in all of his paintings that contribute to making the paintings look tremendously realistic. For instance, this painting here shows three different viewpoints of the sane person, however in the mirror. It can be observed how has used shades of green and yellow in the reflections of the girl, more than he has used those colors in the real one. This indicates how well he has observed the model and painted according to what his eyes showed him.

Secondly, Vincent uses foreshortening very well while painting his figures. Taking the same painting above as an example, the woman’s feet and legs appear to be larger than the rest of her body, when looking at the straight front perspective. Capturing that illusion of something being bigger because its closer creates this depth in the painting and Vincent masters. This gives the painting a sense of realism, and brings the correct proportions. The body figure looks perfect and beautiful because the proportions are right. Although these paintings do not have direct social message to give out, however it certainly has this effect of casual, portrayal of perfection and beauty.

In my opinion all his paintings are magnificent and very successful in terms of accuracy of the shapes of the figures. Vincent will be certainly be a great inspiration to me for my next artwork which is expressive figure painting.
